History
TU Berlin's roots trace back to the Königliche Bergakademie (Royal Mining Academy), founded in 1770, the Königliche Bauakademie (Royal Building Academy), founded in 1799, and the Königliche Gewerbeakademie (Royal Trade Academy), founded in 1821. These three institutions merged in 1879 to form the Königlich Technische Hochschule zu Berlin, with the Mining Academy incorporated in 1916.
In 1946, in a deliberate effort to document a clear break from its National Socialist past, the institution was positioned not as a reopening but as a conscious new founding, taking the name Technische Universität Berlin from that point on — the date now recognized as the university's official founding.
A member of the TU9 alliance, the university is associated with figures such as computer pioneer Konrad Zuse and chemists Carl Bosch and Fritz Haber. Located in Berlin's Charlottenburg district, TU Berlin today maintains a strong research culture in engineering and the natural sciences.
