Founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philip I of Hesse, the world's first university founded as a Protestant institution.
Marburg is a classic small 'university town' (Universitätsstadt) where the historic old town and student life are deeply intertwined.
Particularly strong in medicine, pharmacy and the humanities; the Marburg virus, first identified in the city in 1967, takes its name from here.
