History

Founded in 1558, one of Germany's classic universities, historically associated with figures such as Schiller, Hegel and Fichte, who taught there.

Jena is the historic home of Carl Zeiss and Schott, giving the university deep ties to optics, photonics and precision engineering.

Strong physics and optics research continues today through the Abbe School of Photonics and cooperation with Fraunhofer and Leibniz institutes in Jena.
